Terese Spears Overview of Programming:
Research indicates that students who are suspended out-of-school lose valuable learning time and develop huge gaps in their learning. These students often spend their suspension time at home watching Television, playing computer games, or getting into trouble in the community. Without behavioral and academic interventions during a student’s Out-of-School Suspension, the student comes back to school afterwards and repeats the same disruptive behavior. Out-of-School Suspension becomes a cycle with these students and their achievement gap widens with each Out-of-School Suspension. In the past, Grandview C4 has had a large number of Out-of-School Suspensions annually. As a solution to this problem, during the 2007-2008 school year Grandview C4 implemented the Crossroads Long-Term In-School-Suspension Program at CAIR for students in grades 4-12. Any student in grades 4-12 who has received a three day or more out-of-school suspension is eligible to serve his/her suspension as an in-school-suspension at Crossroads.
By implementing Crossroads, Long-Term In-School-Suspension Program, we provide Education services, including special education and counseling in a full-day setting. Students do not lose credits or learning time and are able to complete classroom assignments and tests while serving their suspension at Crossroads.
If a student and/or parent declines the opportunity to serve the Out-of-School Suspension at Crossroads as an In-School-Suspension, then the student is given an Out-of-School Suspension. During the Out-of-School Suspension time, the student cannot make up assignments, tests, or projects, and he/she cannot earn credit.
If a student does attend Crossroads, and has continuous disruptive behavior and/or a fight, that student will then spend the rest of his/her suspension as Out-of-School Suspension.
