Applying for a Substitute Teaching Position
To qualify to be a substitute teacher, applicants must hold a valid Missouri teaching certificate, or have a degree from an accredited college or university, or have completed/earned a minimum of 60 college credit hours from an accredited college or university.
Effective August, 2010, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education revised procedures by which applicants for substitute teaching in the state of Missouri must apply. We have revised our procedures and application to accommodate the recent changes made by the State of Missouri.
The application procedure must be completed in the order listed.
1. Complete the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education online application. The web address to access the online application is www.dese.mo.gov . Applicants will be required to submit transcripts and submit to a background check during this process. Eligibility from DESE may take up to 2 or 3 weeks based on receipt of fingerprint results and transcripts. Please review/download the guide included below to help navigate through the process. For questions regarding this process, please contact the DESE certification office at 573-751-0051.
*Note: Applicants who hold a valid Missouri teaching certificate are not required to submit transcripts.

2. Complete the Grandview GC-4 Substitute Teaching Application packet.
Note: The State of Missouri application process must be completed prior to submitting the Grandview GC-4 application.
